Born in Graz on March 28, 1943, he studied astronomy, mathematics and physics at the University of Graz, earning a doctorate in astronomy in July 1967. During the final three years of his studies, he worked as a scientific assistant at the university’s Institute for Astronomy.
He later held similar posts at the University of Bochum from 1969 to 1976 and at the University of Vienna from 1976 to 1985, receiving his habilitation in astronomy there in March 1980. From 1985 onward, Maitzen served as a scientific advisor at the Vienna institute and authored more than 200 scientific publications.
