Born in Baja on March 5, 1985, he began competing in triathlon in 2002 and went on to build a notable career in duathlon and long-distance racing. Flander made his Ironman long-distance debut at Ironman Regensburg in 2011, finishing 17th, and later took the Hungarian runner-up spot in the middle distance in 2013.
He qualified twice for the Ironman World Championship in Hawaii and placed second in his age group there in 2014. From 2014 through 2017, he won the Hungarian long-distance triathlon title four years in succession.
