Hans-Georg Backhaus, a German Marxian economist and philosopher, died on March 12, 2026, in Frankfurt.

He was 96 or 97. Backhaus was one of the main authors of the Neue Marx-Lektüre and is considered one of the most important German theorists in the field of Marxian theory of value.

He began a long-term cooperation with Helmut Reichelt during his university studies. In 2026, he ran as a candidate for the Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance in the Frankfurt city council election, but died one week before election day.

Hans-Georg Backhaus (1929, Remda – 8 March 2026, Frankfurt) was a German Marxian economist and philosopher. He was one of the main authors of the Neue Marx-Lektüre and he is considered one of the most important German theorists in the field of Marxian theory of value.
