Born in Skenderaj in Kosovo’s Drenica Valley, she was raised in Pristina, where she attended school and began studying medicine before completing university studies in Zagreb, specializing in pediatrics. She later worked as a journalist for the Albanian-language daily Rilindja, then returned to medicine and spent many years in the Pediatrics Ward of the Pristina General Hospital.

During the unrest in Kosovo in the 1990s, she ran a health clinic in Pristina that provided medical information and shelter to orphaned children.
