Elza Berquó, a Brazilian mathematician and statistician whose work also extended into research, died on July 16, 2026.

Born on October 17, 1925, in Guaxupé, she studied mathematics at the Pontifícia Universidade Católica de Campinas, earned a master’s degree in statistics from the University of São Paulo, and later completed a doctorate in biostatistics at Columbia University in the United States. Berquó taught at the University of São Paulo and the University of Campinas, and in 2001 she became a full member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences in the area of Social Sciences.

She was also known as Elza Salvatori Berquó and received Brazil’s National Order of Scientific Merit.
