Duke Carlisle, the American football player who starred at quarterback for the Texas Longhorns, died on October 2, 2026, at age 84.
Born Emmet Augustus Carlisle III in Kaufman, Texas, he later moved to Athens, where he played quarterback at Athens High School and led the school to three straight district titles. At Texas in the early 1960s, he started as both a quarterback and defensive back, became the starting quarterback on the Longhorns’ 1963 national championship team and, in his final game, set NCAA and Cotton Bowl records for yards per pass completion while earning the game’s offensive most valuable player award.
