David Henderson, an American writer and poet, died on May 14, 2026, at the age of 83.
He was a co-founder of the Black Arts Movement in the 1960s and spent more than four decades as an active member of New York’s Lower East Side art community. Henderson’s work appeared in literary publications and anthologies, and he published four volumes of poetry.
Born in Harlem on September 19, 1942, he attended Bronx Community College, Hunter College and the New School for Social Research, studying writing, communications and Eastern cultures without completing a degree.
