Colin Gabelmann, an English-born Canadian politician who served as British Columbia’s attorney general and an MLA, died October 9, 2026, aged 82.
Born Colin Stuart Gabelmann in London, England, on February 11, 1944, he was educated at the University of British Columbia. A member of the New Democratic Party, he represented North Vancouver-Seymour in the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia from 1972 to 1975, then returned to the legislature in 1979 as the member for North Island, a seat he held until 1996.
His legislative service thus included an initial term in North Vancouver-Seymour and a longer period representing North Island. During his years in the assembly, Gabelmann served as both opposition whip and government whip, taking on party responsibilities in each setting. His cabinet service included the attorney general portfolio, which he held from 1991 to 1995, as well as the post of minister of Government Services. His public offices ranged from constituency representation and party organization to cabinet responsibilities in provincial government. Gabelmann married Robin Geary, and his parents were Honora Elsie Puddifoot and Fritz Gabelmann. He lived in Campbell River, British Columbia.
