Bakir Bayakhunov, a Kazakh composer and People’s Artist of Kazakhstan, died October 9, 2026, aged 93.

Born in Almaty on September 15, 1933, he studied at the Almaty Conservatory, now the Kazakh National Conservatory, in the class of Professor Q. Qojamiyarov, graduating in 1960.

From 1960 to 1963, he continued his musical education at the Moscow Conservatory. In 1963, Bayakhunov began teaching at the Almaty Conservatory, where he became a professor in 1991. He also served as deputy chairman of the Kazakhstan Composers’ Union. His work included arrangements of Kazakh folk music. Among the works listed in biographical accounts are the symphony “Kui” (1965), “Qambar Batyr” (1972) and “Ysqyrma” (1973). Kazakhstan named him a People’s Artist in 1990. His career brought together composition, conservatory teaching and service in the country’s composers’ organization, with formal musical study in Almaty and Moscow.
