Clare Cooper Marcus Architect dead at age 91

Clare Cooper Marcus, an American educator in landscape architecture and architecture, died on January 18, 2026, at age 91.

She was a pioneer in the study of social issues in housing, open space design, and healing landscapes. Born on April 19, 1934, she was raised in a north London suburb.

She earned an undergraduate degree in historical geography from University College, London, and a master’s in urban and cultural geography from the University of Nebraska. She later taught cartography at the University of Sheffield, worked as an urban planner for the Ministry of Housing and the London County Council, and joined the University of California, Berkeley, where she became a research associate and began teaching in the Department of Landscape Architecture in 1969.

Clare Cooper Marcus (April 19, 1934 – January 18, 2026) was an American prominent educator in landscape architecture and architecture and a pioneer in the field of social issues in housing, open space design, and healing landscapes.
