Arthur Dale Bankhurst was born in Cleveland, Ohio, on July 21, 1937. He completed his undergraduate education at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1958 and earned his medical degree from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in 1962.
Bankhurst served as a professor in the department of medicine at the University of New Mexico from 1979 to 2015 and was named a distinguished professor in 2015.
