Born Cesar Enrique Aguinaldo Virata in Kawit, he became the country’s fourth and penultimate prime minister, holding the office from 1981 to 1986. He also served as secretary of finance from 1970 to 1986, becoming a central economic figure in the administration of President Ferdinand Marcos.
Before his death, Virata was corporate vice chairman of Rizal Commercial Banking Corporation. Educated at the Wharton School, he was also known by the name Cesar Emilio Aguinaldo Virata and was associated with the Cesar E.A. Virata School of Business at the University of the Philippines Diliman.
