Martin and held the state’s first lady office from 1985 to 1993. During that period, she supported child protection efforts and substance abuse prevention, relandscaped the grounds of the North Carolina Executive Mansion, and helped establish a state transportation program for planting wildflower beds along highways. She also chaired the North Carolina Commission on Child Victimization and the North Carolina Commission on the Family.
