Boubacar Ould Messaoud Mauritanian human rights activist dead at age 80

Boubacar Ould Messaoud, a Mauritanian human rights activist, died on March 12, 2026, at the age of 80.

Born on May 15, 1945, in Rosso, Mauritania, he fought against slavery in Mauritania and in 1995 founded SOS Esclaves to oppose and seek to eliminate the practice in his country. Slavery was officially abolished in Mauritania in 1981 but continued in various forms for many years.

Messaoud died at his home in Nouakchott, Mauritania.

Boubacar Ould Messaoud (15 May 1945 – 12 March 2026) was a Mauritanian human rights activist. He fought against slavery in Mauritania.
