Born in Reservoir in Melbourne, he became known for historical dramas and for writing about working-class life in the city. His best-known work was the award-winning stage play Remember Ronald Ryan, which dramatised the life and death of Ronald Ryan, the last man executed in Australia.
Over a long career, Dickins wrote for the independent theatre scene and produced dramas and comedies on figures including Sylvia Plath, Dame Joan Sutherland, Squizzy Taylor, Frank Thring, Oscar Wilde and Brett Whiteley.
