Ataur Rahman Bangladeshi actor dead at age 84

Ataur Rahman, a Bangladeshi stage and television actor, died on May 12, 2026.

He was 84. Rahman was also a director and writer, and was known by the sobriquet Monchosharothi.

Born on June 18, 1941, in Noakhali District in what was then Bengal Province, British India, he studied soil science at the University of Dhaka, earning a master’s degree in 1964. Inspired by Rabindranath Tagore’s play Natir Puja, he began taking stage lessons and later acted in his first stage play with Abdullah Al Mamun from Shahidullah Hall at the university. He received the Ekushey Padak in 2001 and the Independence Award in 2021 for his contribution to drama.
