He was 79. Born Alexander John Ligertwood in Drumchapel, Glasgow, on December 18, 1946, he grew up in a musical family and later became a singer, guitarist and drummer with a career that stretched from 1965 to 2026.

Ligertwood played with a number of groups over the years, including Average White Band, The Jeff Beck Group, The Senate, Troc, Go Ahead and Santana, and developed a vocal range that he said covered nearly four octaves. He began on guitar during the skiffle era after singing in school choirs and playing in the Boys’ Brigade pipe band.
