Ackbar Abbas, a Hong Kong literary scholar and professor of comparative literature, died on July 15, 2026.

Born in Kennedy Town in 1942, he taught at the University of California, Irvine, and earlier served as chair of comparative literature at the University of Hong Kong. He also co-directed the Centre for the Study of Globalization and Cultures.

Abbas’s scholarship focused on globalization, Hong Kong and Chinese culture, architecture, cinema, postcolonialism and critical theory. Among his books was Hong Kong: Culture and the Politics of Disappearance, published by the University of Minnesota Press in 1997. He also worked as a contributing editor to Public Culture, the Duke University Press journal.
