He was known for representing Kakinada in Parliament and for his role as a political activist campaigning for the inclusion of the Kapu community in the Backward Class category. Born in Kirlampudi village in what is now Andhra Pradesh, he began his political career as a Janata Party MLA in 1978 and later won successive Assembly elections from the Prattipadu constituency.
He also served as a minister in governments led by the Telugu Desam Party and the Indian National Congress.
