Yukio Ota, the Japanese graphic designer best known for creating the ISO 7010 exit sign and the pictorial language LoCoS, died on August 18, 2026, aged 86.
Born on September 10, 1939, he graduated from Tama Art University in 1962 and later developed LoCoS beginning in 1964. Ota joined Tokyo Zokei University in 1967.
In 1979, he designed the running-man exit sign for a Japanese fire safety association competition; it was later adapted into the ISO 7010 standard.
