Born Yevgeny Davidovich Sverdlov on November 16, 1938, in Dnipro, he became a Doctor of Sciences and one of Russia’s leading biochemical researchers. He was an академician of the Russian Academy of Sciences from 1997 and of the Russian Academy of Agricultural Sciences from 1991, and he served as a distinguished professor at Lomonosov Moscow State University from 1999.
Sverdlov directed the Institute of Molecular Genetics of the Russian Academy of Sciences from 1988 to 2006 and headed a laboratory at the Shemyakin-Ovchinnikov Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry from 1965. He also taught at Boston University from 1996 to 1998.
