Wang Quanying, a Chinese soldier remembered as the last living female participant in the Long March, died on July 22, 2026.
Born in May 1921 in Jinchuan County, Sichuan, she was identified in Chinese as Wang Guixiang and came from a poor Tibetan family. Orphaned at a young age, she was raised by an uncle before being sent to work for a local chieftain, where she tended livestock under the traditional tusi system.
She joined the Fourth Front Army of the Chinese Red Army in 1935 at about 14, along with other local women, and served in the Women’s Independent Regiment as a battlefield medical orderly during the Long March, helping guide troops, carry supplies, cook, fetch water and care for the wounded.
