Born in Motspur Park, London, he competed at the 1960 Summer Olympics and, as a teenager, established himself in athletics through hurdles and decathlon events. Matthews won the Surrey junior 120 yards hurdles title in 1952 and 1953, collected seven senior Surrey hurdles titles between 1955 and 1959, and took the AAA decathlon title in 1956, later building a second career as a school teacher in New Zealand and a furniture maker.
