Born in Speyer on April 30, 1943, he earned bronze medals in the coxless pair at the 1967 European Rowing Championships in Vichy, teamed with Hans-Johann Färber, and again at the 1970 World Rowing Championships in St. Catharines with Lutz Ulbricht.

Brecht also competed at the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City, where he raced in the men’s coxed four and finished 12th.
