Born Anthony Martin Grosvenor Christopher on 25 April 1925, he built a career that also spanned business, trade union work and tax administration. He was educated at Pate’s Grammar School and was later appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.

Christopher also held the distinction, until his departure from the Lords, of being the oldest serving British parliamentarian and the last to have served in the Second World War.
