Tom Rockmore, an American philosopher who wrote extensively on German idealism, died on August 6, 2026, aged 84.

A scholar of the history of philosophy as well as philosophy itself, he argued against drawing a sharp line between the two and developed a constructivist approach to epistemology. Rockmore studied Kant, Fichte, Hegel, Marx, Lukács and Heidegger, and his books included After Parmenides, German Idealism as Constructivism and Art and Truth after Plato.

Born March 4, 1942, he earned a BA in philosophy from Carleton College in 1963, later received his doctorate from Vanderbilt University in 1973, and completed a habilitation from the Université de Poitiers in 1994. He was Distinguished Professor Emeritus at Duquesne University and Distinguished Humanities Chair Professor at Peking University.
