Ryszard Szurkowski, the Polish road bicycle racer who was widely regarded as a legend of the sport in Poland, died on February 1, 2021.
Born on January 12, 1946, in Świebodów, he competed for Poland in two Summer Olympics and won silver medals in the team time trial at the 1972 and 1976 Games. He also captured three gold medals at the World Cycling Amateur Championships, including the individual road race in 1973, and won the Peace Race four times, in 1970, 1971, 1973 and 1975.
Later in life, he ran a bicycle shop in Warsaw. He died in Radom at the age of 75.
