Ruslan Khasbulatov, the Russian economist and politician who helped shape the turbulent early years of post-Soviet Russia, died on January 3, 2023, aged 80.
A Chechen by descent, he was born in Grozny on November 22, 1942, and studied law at Moscow State University before building a career as a university teacher, jurist and economist. He later became chairman of Parliament of Russia, a post from which he emerged as a central figure in the events leading to the 1993 constitutional crisis.
Khasbulatov also taught at Plekhanov Russian Economic University and received honours including the title of Honoured Science Worker of the Russian Federation and the Medal “For Labour Valour.”
