Robert Hallinen, an American journalist and photojournalist who spent 33 years at the Anchorage Daily News, died on July 26, 2026, at age 77.

Born Robert James Hallinen on October 25, 1948, in Marquette, Michigan, he began his career in photography as a student assistant at Northern Michigan University before working for local newspapers in Michigan and taking a one-year post with the Ketchikan Daily News in Alaska. He later joined the Anchorage Times and then the Anchorage Daily News, where his work contributed to the newspaper’s 1989 Pulitzer Prize for Public Service for the “People in Peril” series.

He was also named a Pulitzer Prize finalist in 1990 for coverage of the Exxon Valdez oil spill.
