Ray Lampkin dead at age 78, American boxer

Ray Lampkin, an American boxer, died on June 3, 2026.

He was 78. Lampkin turned professional as a lightweight and became known for a 1975 World Boxing Association title challenge against Roberto Durán in Panama, where he lasted 14 rounds before losing.

Born in Ward, Texas, and raised in Portland, Oregon, he also won the North American Boxing Federation lightweight title before later losing it to Esteban de Jesús in New York City. He finished his career with 34 wins, including 16 by knockout, six losses and one draw, and was later inducted into the Oregon Sports Hall of Fame.
