He was 72. Born in Kolkata on September 19, 1953, Dasgupta became known for work in Bangla syntax, morphology and sociolinguistics, as well as for his contributions to Esperanto studies and language politics.
He published his first article in phonology at 18 in Indian Linguistics, the journal of the Linguistic Society of India, and later completed a doctoral dissertation at New York University on questions and relative and complement clauses in a Bangla grammar. He was associated with the substantivist approach to linguistics and also served in leadership roles in the Esperanto movement, including as president of the Universal Esperanto Association from 2007 to 2013.
