Probal Dasgupta, the Indian linguist, Esperantist and former president of the Universal Esperanto Association, died on June 1, 2026, at the age of 72 after a stroke.
Born in Kolkata on September 19, 1953, he built a career spanning linguistics, Esperanto studies and university teaching. He published his first article on phonology at 18, later completed a doctoral dissertation at New York University on Bangla grammar, and became known for work on Bangla syntax, morphology and sociolinguistics.
Dasgupta also wrote on language politics and Esperanto, and served as president of the Universal Esperanto Association from 2007 to 2013.
