Phillips Robbins, an American biochemist and professor emeritus at Boston University, died on August 31, 2026, aged 96.
Born in Barre, Massachusetts, in 1930, he built a long academic career in biochemistry that included nearly four decades on the faculty of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He joined MIT in 1960 as one of several young biochemists recruited to the department of biology by Jack Buchanan, and there he worked closely with Salvador Luria on the structure and biochemistry of lipopolysaccharides.
In 1998, he moved to Boston University School of Dental Medicine, where he became professor emeritus in the department of molecular and cell biology.
