Celestí Alomar Mateu, a Spanish politician and tourism official who served in the Parliament of the Balearic Islands from 1999 to 2007, died on August 31, 2026, aged 76.
Born in Llubí in 1949, he studied geography and history at the University of Barcelona and was among the founders of the Partit Socialista de les Illes in 1976, a party that later became the Partit Socialista de Mallorca. A member of the PSIB-PSOE, he represented the Balearic Islands in the regional parliament in the fifth and sixth legislatures and later served in the Government of the Balearic Islands.
He was also director general for tourism strategy in the final government of Felipe González, and as tourism councillor from 1999 to 2003 under Francesc Antich he helped advance the Ecotaxa project. After leaving parliament in 2007, he worked as a consultant for the Inter-American Development Bank and the World Tourism Organization.
