Born in Tullamore, County Offaly, on November 16, 1933, he played at club level with Tullamore and represented the Offaly senior football team at inter-county level. He was educated at Tullamore CBS and later at Belcamp College, where he lined out in the Leinster Colleges SFC in 1951.
O’Reilly’s playing career included an Offaly minor double in 1950, an Offaly IFC title in 1953, and senior county titles with Tullamore in 1954, 1956 and 1963.
