Phil Hay, an Australian rules footballer who played for Hawthorn in the VFL during the 1960s, died on May 31, 2026, aged 88.
Born on February 7, 1938, Hay spent his career in a range of roles before becoming Hawthorn’s 19th man in the club’s first premiership side in 1961. After Les Kaine left at the end of the 1962 season, he moved into the fullback position and produced the strongest football of his career, finishing equal second in the 1964 Brownlow Medal count.
He was also one of three brothers to play for Hawthorn, alongside Bill and Sted.
