Born in Bromley, Kent, on May 10, 1942, he studied in America. His first novel, Play Things, won the Somerset Maugham Award in 1973.
Prince also wrote for television: his work on the BBC miniseries Oppenheimer earned him an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Writing in a Limited Series or a Special. The production was broadcast in 1980. His 1983 novel The Good Father was adapted for the screen in 1985, with Anthony Hopkins starring in the film. His screenwriting credits also included A Song for Europe (1985) and Waterland (1992).
