Peter Maher, the Canadian radio broadcaster best known as the Calgary Flames’ longtime play-by-play voice, died on August 13, 2026, aged 79.
Born in Campbellton, New Brunswick, he began broadcasting as a teenager and went on to build a career in hockey coverage that included a stint calling Toronto Maple Leafs games before becoming the first radio voice of the Flames when the team moved to Calgary in 1980. Maher remained behind the microphone for every Flames game on CFAC through the 2013–14 NHL season, a run that lasted 33 years and made his calls familiar to generations of listeners.
