Born in Glamorgan, Wales, on January 18, 1939, he trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, where he was taught by Peter Barkworth and graduated in 1960. He worked in film and television from 1961 to 1979.
After giving up acting in the early 1980s, Grist became a restorer of vintage cars, notably Alfa Romeos and Maseratis, and raced them in historic events with his son Matt.
