Patrick Baudelaire, a French computer scientist and engineer recognized as a pioneer in desktop publishing and computer graphics, died on August 27, 2026, aged 81.

Born on March 30, 1945, in Hanoi, French Indochina, he studied at École Polytechnique with the class of 1964 before completing his engineering education at the École nationale des ponts et chaussées. He later went to the United States, following his longtime friend Henri Gouraud, to join the first cohort of PhD students in the University of Utah’s computer science department, where David Evans led a program influenced by Ivan Sutherland.

Baudelaire was also associated with early work in CGI and computer-assisted animation.
