Born on January 1, 1942, he was Denmark’s ambassador to Algeria. Olsen worked for Denmark’s Foreign Ministry from 1969 and served in Morocco, Algeria, Saudi Arabia, Rwanda, Chile and Peru.

He was also a practicing Muslim and, in 1993, completed a bicycle pilgrimage to Mecca. He was appointed coordinator for one of the US-led provisional authorities in Southern Iraq, based in Basra, during the 2003 invasion of Iraq.
