He was a professor in the Department of Applied Physics at the University of Dhaka and a prominent leader in Bangladesh’s Hindu minority community. Bhowmik also served as Bangladesh’s ambassador to Nepal, a posting that drew controversy during his term, and later became president of the Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council.

In 2007, while he was chairperson of the applied physics department at Dhaka University, he was arrested during student protests under the military-backed caretaker government; a court declared him innocent in March 2008. The following year, Bangladesh appointed him ambassador to Nepal, and in July 2010 he received the Mother Teresa Gold Medal.
