Min Htin Ko Ko Gyi dead at age 65, poet and political prisoner

Min Htin Ko Ko Gyi, a Burmese film director, poet and political prisoner, died on June 2, 2026.

He was 65. Born in 1961, he was also known as a Burmese writer and filmmaker, and his work included documentary filmmaking as well as poetry.

He directed eight feature-length films and two documentaries, and in 2013 founded the Human Dignity Film Institute to train young filmmakers. His 2010 documentary Floating Tomatoes won an award from the Documentary Film Association of Southeast Asian States. In 2019, he was arrested after posting Facebook comments critical of the Tatmadaw, later sentenced to one year of hard labour, and then detained again after the 2021 Myanmar coup before his release in November 2022.
