Milton Windler, the American NASA flight director who helped guide some of the space agency’s most significant missions, died on October 1, 2026, aged 94.

Known as Milt Windler, he joined NASA in 1959 during Project Mercury after serving as a jet fighter pilot, initially working in the recovery division before being promoted to flight director by Chris Kraft. He later supported Eugene Kranz after the Apollo 1 fire and became one of the four flight directors on the Apollo 13 mission operations team, which was recognized with the Presidential Medal of Freedom for bringing the crippled spacecraft safely back to Earth.

Windler also served as flight director on Apollo 8, Apollo 10, Apollo 11, Apollo 14, Apollo 15 and all three Skylab missions. After the Apollo program, he worked in the Space Shuttle Project Office on Remote Manipulator Systems Operations until 1978 and received the NASA Exceptional Service Medal.
