Born in Třebíč on September 18, 1944, he was also sometimes known as Miloš Kopečný and came from Nové Dvory, where his father built the family home and a cannery. In Třebíč, Kopečný took part in amateur theatre, working under director Josef Gerža alongside Jiří Pecha and Karel Pospíšil.

He completed his gymnasium studies in the town before pursuing formal acting training in Brno. In 1965, he graduated in dramatic acting from the Janáček Academy of Music and Performing Arts.
