Max Cunningham (rower) Australian Olympic rower dead at age 89

Max Cunningham, the Australian Olympic rower who competed in the men’s eight at the 1960 Summer Olympics, died on December 14, 2025, aged 89.

Born Alexander Maxwell Cunningham in Western Australia on June 9, 1936, he was a 1960 national champion. Cunningham was educated at Aquinas College, Perth, where he rowed in the school’s first VIII in his final two years.

He later rowed for the Swan River Rowing Club and made his first state representative selection for Western Australia in the 1958 senior eight at the King’s Cup.

Alexander Maxwell Cunningham (9 June 1936 – 14 December 2025) was an Australian representative rower. He was a 1960 national champion and competed in the men’s eight event at the 1960 Summer Olympics.
