Manuela Hoelterhoff German-born American cultural journalist, cancer dead at age 77

Manuela Hoelterhoff, a German-born American cultural journalist who was executive editor of Muse, the arts and culture section of Bloomberg News, died on May 6, 2026, of cancer.

She was 77. Hoelterhoff won the Pulitzer Prize for Criticism in 1983.

Born in Hamburg on April 6, 1949, she immigrated to the United States with her parents in 1957. She later earned a bachelor’s degree from Hofstra University and a master’s degree from the Institute of Fine Arts of New York University.
