Manfred Rühl, a German higher education teacher and communication scholar, died on August 5, 2026, aged 92.
Born in Nuremberg on December 31, 1933, he studied economics and social sciences after first training as an industrial clerk and working as a freelance journalist for newspapers, magazines and radio. He went on to study at the University of Erlangen, the Free University of Berlin and the Hochschule für Wirtschaft und Sozialwissenschaften, and later served on the faculty during the transition of the Nürnberg Hochschule into the Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg’s Faculty of Economics and Social Science.
From 1964 to 1968 he worked as a scientific assistant in communication science at the university’s Chair of Political and Communication Science, and in 1968 he earned a doctorate with a dissertation on newspapers as organized social systems.
