Limmie Pulliam, an opera singer and American tenor, died on May 19, 2026.
Born Limmie Demetrus Pulliam in Kennett, Missouri, on January 10, 1976, he became known for his powerful voice and for pushing back against industry bias over his weight. He graduated from Oberlin College in 1998 and sang in church as a child after first drawing attention in middle school with an imitation of Stevie Wonder that led a choir director to introduce him to opera.
Pulliam later left singing for a time after repeated demands that he lose weight to secure auditions, working instead as a debt collector and security guard before returning to public attention in 2007 as an organizer for Barack Obama’s presidential campaign in Missouri.
