Keith Christmas, the English singer and songwriter, died of renal cancer on October 8, 2026, aged 79.
Born Keith Peter Christmas in Wivenhoe, near Colchester, Essex, on October 13, 1946, he went to Bath University to study architecture. The architecture school was then based at Kingsweston House in Bristol, and Christmas became part of the city’s folk scene.
His recording career began in 1969 with the release of Stimulus on RCA Victor, through a production deal with Sandy Roberton’s September Productions, to which Christmas was signed. He played acoustic guitar on David Bowie’s Space Oddity album and appeared at the first Glastonbury Festival in 1970. Through the 1970s, he released albums on B&C and Manticore, while touring with and supporting bands including The Who and King Crimson. His active years as a musician stretched from the late 1960s to 2026, encompassing songwriting, recording and live performance. The milestones of his early career crossed several settings: a debut album, a contribution to Bowie’s recording and an appearance at a major festival, before further releases and tours in the following decade. Christmas’s biography linked his architectural studies in Bristol with the folk scene he joined there, before his recorded work and touring took him into wider musical company.
