Nana Patekar, the Indian actor and filmmaker, died of cardiac arrest on October 8, 2026, aged 75.

Born Vishwanath Patekar in Murud on January 1, 1951, he studied at Sir Jamsetjee Jeejebhoy School of Art and worked chiefly in Hindi and Marathi cinema. His Bollywood acting debut came in the 1978 drama Mimagaman.

The Academy Award-nominated Salaam Bombay (1988) was among his early prominent films. For his performance in the crime drama Parinda (1989), he won the National Film Award and Filmfare Award for best supporting actor. He later made his directorial debut with Prahaar, adding filmmaking and screenwriting to his work as a performer. During the early 2000s, he drew notice for roles in Shakti: The Power (2002), Ab Tak Chhappan (2004) and Apaharan (2005); the last earned him a Filmfare Award for best villain. He also became widely known as the gangster Uday Shetty in the comedy Welcome (2007) and its sequel Welcome Back (2015), and appeared in Taxi No. 9211 (2006). Patekar received three National Film Awards, four Filmfare Awards, two Maharashtra State Film Awards and Filmfare Awards Marathi. In 2013, he was awarded the Padma Shri for his contributions to cinema and the arts.
